Computation of Rayleigh Damping Coefficients for Large Systems

چکیده
For systems with large degrees of freedom, it is difficult to guess meaningful values of Rayleigh damping coefficients α and β at the start of an analysis. A number of general-purpose commercially available have the provision of providing the value of α and β for calculation of Rayleigh damping matrix for dynamic analysis of systems with multi-degree of freedom. Since an engineer may not be in a position to pre-assess the same at the beginning, has no option but to assume an unrealistic constant damping ratio for all modes. Based on the present technique it is very simple to develop a spreadsheet and arrive at a rational value of α and β which develops a damping ratio sequence increasing progressively with each of the subsequent modes and one can furnish input data for the dynamic analysis.

Selection of Rayleigh Damping Coefficients for Seismic Response Analysis of Soil Layers
Abstract—One good analysis method in seismic response analysis is direct time integration, which widely adopts Rayleigh damping. An approach is presented for selection of Rayleigh damping coefficients to be used in seismic analyses to produce a response that is consistent with Modal damping response. In the presented approach, the expression of the error of peak response, acquired through compl...
متن کاملFast frequency response computation for Rayleigh damping
We present a model reduction Lanczos method for the computation of frequency response functions of Rayleigh damping problems. The connection with modal extraction and modal superposition is made. The usual model reduction methods require complex arithmetic. With the proposed method, complex arithmetic is only used for the reduced problem. A numerical example from structural damping is given.

An experimental and numerical study of free convection heat transfer from a channel consisting of a vertical sinusoidal wavy surface and a vertical flat plate has been carried out. The vertical wavy surface was maintained at a constant temperature, while the flat plate is adiabatic. A Mach-Zehnder Interferometer was used to determine the local heat transfer coefficients of sinusoidal wavy surfa...

Finite element models for structures and vibrations often lead to second order dynamical systems with large sparse matrices. For large-scale finite element models, the computation of the frequency response function and the structural response to dynamic loads may present a considerable computational cost. Padé via Krylov methods are widely used and appreciated projection-based model reduction t...

This paper discusses static and dynamic response of nanoplate resting on an orthotropic visco-Pasternak foundation based on Eringen’s nonlocal theory. Graphene sheet modeled as nanoplate which is assumed to be orthotropic and viscoelastic. By considering the Mindlin plate theory and viscoelastic Kelvin-Voigt model, equations of motion are derived using Hamilton’s principle which are then solved...
